Urban Pests

Home Improvement

Think of urban development and you think people, but you only need to scratch the surface and you soon realize that there is a whole host of creatures that share the space with you. You do not have to live in the countryside to get a taste of wildlife so what kind of creatures could we meet in our built-up areas?

There has been increasing number of complaints about mice. Winter conditions can force them indoors where they build nests and forage for food. This can cause a lot of problems for homeowners as they can chew through wires, wood and pipes. Mice often live in hidden areas such as storage space, attics and inside walls and can be difficult to remove once they have set up home.

Rats are other rodents are also commonplace in built up areas. The animals can carry many unpleasant diseases, usually through their urine and these include salmonella, listeria and toxoplasma gondii. If you find them near your home, you will need to take action.

Pigeons are also classed as a pest by many for much the same reasons as gulls. While they are not aggressive like gulls, the increase in their population in urban settings causes problems with building damage and fouling problems. Wasps are a major nuisance, especially during warmer weather when their desire for sweetness seems to have them forever ruining the experience of summer ice cream. Wasps tend to build their nests in other things which is why they happen quite often in the roof space, lofts and warehouses. They need to be controlled because they are aggressive and will attack and sting.
