Tips for Maintaining Your Oak Beams

Home Improvement

Oak is known as the king of hardwoods. The fact that it’s resistant to decay and insect attacks, and also easy to take care of makes it an excellent choice for your home or office. But you may not have that much experience in keeping your wood beams looking good. As with all things in life, practice makes perfect! Here are a few tips for taking care of your oak wood beams:

o Wood should ideally be pressure washed prior to installation but if this hasn’t been possible, you can remove mould and dirt by washing the beam and scraping it. Oak can be damaged by the ultraviolet rays from the sun. Sunlight can cause the timber to fade, making them look washed out and old. This is especially true of hardwoods that have a light colour, such as oak. Be sure to protect your oak beams from being exposed to too much direct sunlight. o If your oak beams need cleaning, it’s best to avoid using products that contain bleach. A stem cleaner will do a good job of opening up the grain of the wood for a deeper clean. This will also sterilise the beams, Steam cleaning brings all the embedded dirt to the surface, so you will need to rinse and repeat the process. Sanding down will also remove any stubborn scratches or deep stains.
