Is slip-lining the future of drain repairs?

Home Improvement

Drainage systems are one of those out-of-sight, out-of-mind things for most people, but when they go wrong, it’s difficult to ignore and often the start of major disruptions, headaches, and a big dent in the bank balance. In the past, if your drains were blocked up, backed up, or overflowing, then just getting to the root of the problem involved major upheaval as it meant digging an exploration trench before any work replacing the pipes could be considered. Nowadays, thankfully the experience is much less painful with CCTV exploration and slip-lining pipes in place instead of digging them up and replacing them.

How does slip-lining work?

After the CCTV inspection has identified where any new slip-lining is needed, the old pipes will be thoroughly cleaned of any build-up of debris. The slip-lining will be slightly smaller in diameter than the pipe and can be inserted through predetermined points such as access chambers. Depending on the length of the existing pipe or any bends involved, the slip-lining can be inserted in sections or as a single piece. After the slip-lining is in place, specially prepared grout will be injected between the slip-lining and the old pipe to give it structural support.

When this is complete, it will be flow and leak tested and finally checked with the CCTV to make sure it is ready to use. The Benefits of Slip-lining.

Apart from the obvious benefit of not having your property and sometimes neighbouring properties dug up, sometimes destroying mature trees, well-tended gardens, and patio areas, there are also other benefits. Slip-lining has a smooth surface which allows greater flow and makes the build-up of sludge and debris in the pipe that much harder. The longevity of the lined pipe will be greatly increased, with some estimates predicting up to 70 years of life.

A clean, practical solution to what was once a nightmare problem.
