Four Ways to Help your Mental Health in the Winter

During the winter, and in particular that seemingly endless stretch of time after Christmas and before Spring arrives, it is more common to feel that you are struggling with low mood. Mental health problems can often feel worse in the winter months for many people – the lack of sunlight, the feeling that once Christmas is over there is nothing to look forward to and things like the cold and money worries all play a big part in this.

If you are feeling like this, here are some of the things that you can do to help you to feel better…

Speak to Someone – When you are feeling low, it is important to tell someone how you are feeling. A close friend or a trusted family member may be able to help you, and the feeling that you are not alone will also help. If this is something that you are struggling with, speak to a doctor who will be able to offer help and advice, or find a counsellor who will be able to help you work through your feelings.

Do Something Creative – Being creative can really help you to manage some of those difficult feelings and gives your mind a positive focus. Whether you get yourself a knitting kit, take up a watercolour painting class or even get creative in the kitchen, all of these things can be a great way to help you if you are struggling.

Plan Something to Look Forward to – Because it can feel like there is not much going on after the hype and excitement of the festive season, some people can then start to feel a little empty. This is a great time to plan something, whether it is a holiday to look forward to, or something that you want to do such as going to see a show for example.

Take Time for You – Make sure that you are taking the time to focus on yourself. This might be going out to the gym to get some exercise or relaxing with a book at the end of the day. Make sure that you have time that is your own, and you are not just giving yourself to others all of the time.
