How sitting at your desk all day can be bad for your back

Business

Back problems are becoming more and more common the less mobile we become during our work day. Many of us find that we spend increasingly longer periods of time sitting at our desks. This is unsustainable for our backs as the long periods of no movement and often incorrect sitting postures lead to stress and strain being put on our lower backs, necks and shoulders. It is a common complaint that is seen by a Chiropractor Dublin such as https://www.chiropractix.ie/ and one that can be controlled.

It is important to ensure that when you work for long periods of time sitting at a desk that you have the right set up. You should be able to pull your chair as close to your desk as is comfortable and be able to rest your forearms onto the surface of the desk. Your keyboard should then be a comfortable distance away from you so that you can reach to type. The computer screen should be elevated so that you are looking directly at the centre portion of the screen and you should not need to move your neck to see this.

Your seating position should allow you to feel the chair against your back and if you find that your lower back does not reach the chair you can buy a lumbar support to help with this. You then want to ensure that you are sitting with your weight evenly distributed across both hips and that you sit with your knees at a 90 degree angle to the floor, with both feet flat on the floor. Again if you can not reach the floor you can use a riser to bring the floor closer to your feet.
