Which yarns are best for beginner crochet fans?

Lifestyle

Starting out on your journey into the wonderful world of crochet can be daunting and exciting in equal measures, with a whole host of supplies and yarns available.

There is no official ‘crochet yarn’. Instead, crafters can choose their favourite fibres and blends. Having a basic understanding of yarns is a great foundation for choosing your preferences.

Wool is an excellent choice for crochet work, as it has resilient properties and is highly forgiving when it comes to beginner errors. Cotton is also a great choice, especially when creating lightweight summer pieces. Acrylic is also popular, due to its affordability, the vast array of colours, and its availability.

Best Crochet Yarns

When you start on your crochet journey it is natural that errors will be made, with frequent unravelling and re-crocheting required. It therefore makes sense to opt for an inexpensive yarn that can withstand heavy handling.

A gentle, solid-coloured yarn that is easy on the eye means that you can see stitches and progress with greater clarity, rather than getting lost in the pattern. Neutrals and pastels are a great option.

Using a plied yarn also allows for better visibility of stitches and great definition. Opt for one with a smooth texture where you can easily see each individual strand.

Worsted and bulky-weight yarns are considered to be suitable for crochet beginners. They would be in category 4 or 5 and are also known as medium or Aran yarn.

DK Yarn

DK yarn. is a perfect example of an excellent choice for crochet beginners. It is available in a selection of fibres and blends, from 100% cotton to acrylic and wool mixes. There is a wealth of knowledge and resources online where crochet fans can learn a host of information on yarns, weights, fibres and materials. However, often choosing and collecting your favourite yarns is a standalone pastime.
