Knitting in hotter weather can often seem less than appealing. Heavy wool can feel sticky on your skin, you don’t want to think about jumpers or scarves in a heatwave, and there always seem to be a million other things to do outdoors; however, there are some knitting projects that can be carried out in the summer months. Let’s see whether we can conjure up some summer knitting inspiration for you.
Sun hats
Wearing a sun hat is a great way to protect your skin and scalp from the damaging rays of the sun and help to prevent skin cancer. Knitting a sun hat from cotton, linen or bamboo yarn can give a nice drape; what’s more, you can add a wide brim or visor to protect your face from the sun. If you are feeling adventurous, you could also add a ribbon or pompom trim for a unique sun hat.
Baby items
Whatever the time of year, there are always presents that need to be knitted. If there are any new babies in your family or friendship circle, try knitting with cotton, bamboo, or acrylic yarn. Blankets, lightweight cardigans, hats and booties all make lovely gifts for newborn babies. You could also try a knitting kit for inspiration, such as a knitting kit from Wool Couture.
Lightweight socks
You can never have too many socks and they are always useful, even when the weather is warm. Linen blend, cotton or bamboo yarns are breathable, and you could add lace or mesh stitch patterns for more breathability and ventilation. Ankle-length or trainer sock styles work well in the summer months; alternatively, you could knit some warmer socks ready for the winter.
Totes or bags
If you are heading to the beach this summer, a bag is always handy. You can easily knit one using a simple stitch such as seed stitch or garter stitch; alternatively, seamless styles worked in the round are pretty simple. If you are feeling creative, you can add pockets, drawstrings or leather handles, depending on your style requirements.
