Free NHS Services Extended for Care Leavers

Health

Any adult who has spent time in care may face many challenges. However they can now look forward to an extended package of free NHS services.

The legal definition of a care leaver, is any person who has been under the care of the Local Authority, for a period of 13 weeks or more, spanning their 16th Birthday. Time in care may be as a result of neglect, abuse, homelessness, or the death of a parent.

Care Leavers

Young people who have been in care have already faced many challenges, and some can be left feeling lost and unsupported when they reach the age of 18.

In a bid to tackle inequalities, the Government has extended free NHS services to care leavers, which will include free prescriptions, as well as dental and eyecare services.

These services will be available to care leavers until the age of 25.

As well as free NHS services, the Government has also pledged to ensure that care leavers can access better mental health support and a guaranteed interview scheme for those considering NHS job opportunities.

Foster Care

If you are interested in becoming a foster carer, specialist foster care Newport agencies such as saferfostering.org.uk/foster-care-wales/newport/ aim to provide a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic environment.

As well as dedicated and comprehensive support, a reputable fostering agency will offer a specialist private healthcare package for all carers and children in their care. This helps to reduce the strain on public health services, whilst ensuring good healthcare, paramount to a child’s development.
