How to Test Compliance Elearning Knowledge Retention

Education

Forcing completion of a module does not guarantee that the user has grasped the messages in the Compliance Elearning. Here are some methods to test knowledge retention.

Schedule Spaced Repetition Quizzes

Issue 5 – Follow up quizzes that test knowledge retention held two weeks after completion and then again at 6 weeks after the original module have been found to successfully test if knowledge has actually been retained. (See test method 3 above)

Use Scenario-Based Questions

To check for retention, question the recipient of a module for applied knowledge as opposed to simply recalling information from a module, e.g. Such a test will check whether compliance elearning has any value in terms of the recipient being able to apply knowledge to a given situation, which is what training and development is about in the workplace.

Run Line Manager Spot Checks

Staff running short situations in team meetings for 5 minutes or so and then asking the team how they think each situation should be handled.

Survey the Team Anonymously

Staff feeling unsure about key aspects of your compliance training is a weakness that shows up in survey results (i.e. anonymously across whole teams of staff, not as an individual’s confession), so can form part of your survey-based research to see where you need to be delivering a refresher to staff.

Watch Real-World Indicators

Review incident reports, near misses or policy breaches before and after the delivery of training programs. If staff are reporting near misses that they previously would have ignored, then this is a positive sign that staff are able to recognise and manage potential situations.

Measuring retention of learning with tests takes some planning, but in the end it gives you the greatest assurance that your team can act on what they learned.
